I’ve been working on a selection of boat hire invoices, boatyard letters and other sundry items for the website over the weekend. Once again, I am indebted to Joyce Chesney for the following little gem!
Roys’ of Wroxham 1933 stores list
In amongst the Broads related ephemera which Joyce kindly sent to me, was a facsimile copy of a 1933 Roys’ of Wroxham stores list which gives a wonderful insight into what holidaymakers were ordering to be delivered to their boatyard prior to the start of their week afloat. Along with the usual fresh bread, milk, eggs, butter and cooked meats, there are, as you would expect, a variety of tinned and packeted goods. What’s interesting to see is that there are several brand names amongst the list which are still familiar to this day including Chiver’s jam and marmalade, Del Monte fruit, Ideal condensed milk, Camp coffee and Typhoo tea. Remember that many people were travelling to the Broads by train in those days and it wouldn’t really have been possible to carry anything other than your clothing and personal items as luggage. Along with the foodstuffs, more practical items were included on the list …. candles, matches, Lux soap and Vim! The image above shows just part of the 1933 list – the full version was uploaded to the Broadland Memories website as a PDF file this morning and can be found within the “Miscellaneous” category of the Paper & Ephemera section of the archive.
Along with the Roys’ stores list, I’ve also uploaded a selection of boat hire invoices dating from between 1968-1971 which were also sent to me by Joyce, a 1967 Jack Powles invoice for one of the “Star Glory” class, submitted by John Turner, and letters from the boatyards of Clifford Allen (1966), Jack Powles (1968) and J.Loynes (1975) which are also courtesy of John Turner. These can all be found in the “Boatyard & Boats” section within the archive.
