If you’re anything like me, you probably don’t even want to think about it yet, but with Christmas just over five weeks away I thought I’d take the opportunity to do a shameless plug for the Broadland Memories DVD’s which would make excellent stocking fillers for anyone with an interest in boating on the Norfolk Broads!
“Boating on The Norfolk Broads in the 1930s” was released earlier this year and features the home movies taken by one family over the course of two holiday’s on the Norfolk Broads in 1931 and 1932. Hiring on both occasions from Herbert Woods yard at Potter Heigham, the film follows the family as they cover most of the northern and southern rivers, visiting Horning, Coltishall, Horsey, Cantley and Oulton Broad amongst others. There are some superb shots of the boats they hired – “Spark of Light” and “Countess of Light” – as well as showing many long lost bridges and landscapes which have changed dramatically over the last 80 years. Shot on 16mm cine film, the quality of the footage is very good indeed and gives a real insight into how a family boating holiday was conducted during that era. “The Norfolk & Suffolk Broads c1950” was released in May 2006 and is a collection of footage taken by my grandfather of Broadland c1950. Discovering the footage amongst the collection of his cine films which I had inherited actually sowed the seeds of the Broadland Memories Archive …. and the rest, as they say, is history! Filmed over the course of several day trips with boating friends, the DVD features scenes of Oulton Broad, Cantley, Great Yarmouth, Wroxham, Salhouse Broad and a stunning colour section of Horning. Transferred professionally from 8mm cine film, my grandfather captured some lovely footage of classic yachts and beautiful wooden motor cruisers. The DVD runs for approximately 20 minutes and is priced at £6 which includes UK p&p.
