Now, I’ve met a few old Broads yachtsmen, but I can honestly say that not one of them has ever offered me a glass of Horlicks! Beer, wine … yes …. maybe even a tea or a coffee …. but they are obviously missing a trick! This advert from 1935 extols the virtues of the malty beverage whilst sailing on the Broads … either hot or cold, morning, noon and night, it was guaranteed to make you feel good! And with a vintage take on the seafaring tradition of a tot of rum to keep out the cold and damp, I just love the suggestion that adding either rum or whiskey to your Horlicks suddenly makes it a “man’s” drink! So next time you tie up to the rhond for a drink, (or a smoke!), remember to reach for the Horlicks.
I’m just popping down to Tesco’s to replenish my supplies!
