1960s Photo Gallery

Continuing the collection of photographs taken during a holiday on “Golden Beaver” in the late 1960s.

Salhouse Broad - the cruiser moored in the foreground is “Rose of Sharon” which was part of Herbert Woods fleet at Potter Heigham. The 32ft, 4 berth cruiser cost between £40 and £65 for a week’s hire, depending on season.

Another photograph taken at Salhouse Broad. The cruiser in the foreground on the right is A874 “July Dawn”, built by Porter and Haylett, but owned and operated by Dawn Craft from their base on Daisy Broad at Hoveton/Wroxham.

This is presumably taken at Salhouse Broad too.

Horning Ferry mill - another much photographed building.

A842 - “Gay Lady 10” from Herbert Woods, pictured here at Horning. Sleeping 2 people, a week’s hire in 1968 cost between £19 and £23.

I can’t make out the registration number here, but this was one of the Southgates fleet, based in Horning.

The entrance to Daisy Broad at Hoveton/Wroxham, with the edge of the Beehive stores seen to the left, and Dawn Craft’s boatyard in the background to the right of centre. The cruiser ahead is one of the Dawn Craft fleet - B576 “May Dawn” which was one of the 3 berth “April Dawn” class. In the background, centre and to the left, are the Daisy Broad villas which I have written about on the Broadland Memories blog. You can see Southernhome and Broadwaters, whilst the third, Kia Manzi, is just out of sight.

The green at Coltishall, The Rising Sun pub can be seen in the distance.

I’m not certain of the location here, but it looks to be one of the upper waterways - perhaps the Bure between Wroxham and Coltishall or maybe the Upper Waveney.

Enjoying a cuppa whilst underway!

Journey planning for the next leg of the holiday. Once again, I’m not certain of the location, but you can see a few of the “Flat-Afloat” houseboats in the background. There were 11 of these available for hire at Wayford Bridge at the time, so it may well be there.

A wild mooring in the last image from this collection - unknown location but possibly on the River Ant?
