Broadland Memories Mystery Page
Here we have two pictures of the same man taken at The Lord Nelson st Reedham, the
first in 1955 and the second in 1956. Does anyone know who he was? I have differing
memories from the contributors of these images as to whether he was the landlord
or just a local character.
Porter & Haylett Workers c1983
The photograph above was sent in by Iain Gray and was taken c1983 whilst he was working
at the Porter and Haylett boatyard in Wroxham. Are you one of the workers pictured?
If so, and you have some interesting memories of your time there which you would
like to share, please do get in contact with us.

This ex military motor torpedo boat was identified as being MTB-653 and has been
labelled as being taken at Horning in 1951. This proved to be a bit of a mystery
as it seemed such a large vessel to have on the Northern Rivers. Thanks to various
people contacting me, it has been established that the picture was indeed taken at
Horning, on a section of the River Bure between Cockshoot Dyke and F.B.Wilds site
(now Waterside Marine). The MTB was used as a liveaboard at Horning during the 1950s
and early 1960s, residing at what was to become the new F.B.Wilds boatyard. The superstructure
would have been removed to allow passage underneath the bridges at Great Yarmouth
and Acle and enable the boat to get up to Horning. When Wilds began work on creating
their new mooring basin, the MTB was moved, eventually ending up on the Southern
Rivers at Norwich. Pictorial evidence from c1973 shows it moored on the Wensum. What
happened to MTB-653 after this time is still unclear.
On this page I will post up any photographs which have been submitted that have locations, boats, places or faces that cannot be identified or have thrown up any queries. If you can help with information about any of the pictures below then please do get in contact with us.

The photograph dates from 1904 and was amongst the collection of Edwardian photos
taken by amateur photographer Donald Shields. There was some difficulty in providing
an accurate location for it, although the clue of the name “Newstead” on the boat
shed was suggesting that it might be Cantley and the photo was believed to have
been taken on the River Yare. Once again, this has now been positively identified
as being a very rare photograph of the boatyards at Cantley during their heyday.
The boat shed was that of “Woods & Newstead” - the Woods being Ernest Woods and the
shed seen above was where he began building his Yare & Bure One Design dinghy’s in
1908. The boat sheds and wind pump seen above were demolished in 1912 and the famous
sugar beet factory was built on the site.
This is one of a large batch of photographs of Broadland taken in 1903 and 1904 by an amateur photographer named Donald Shields. Many boats and locations featured have proved difficult to identify. The photograph above was within the sequence of photographs which appear to have been taken on the River Yare in 1904. It is obviously a Broad .... could this possibly be either Rockland or Surlingham Broad?
If you can help with identifying any of the boats, wherries and locations in the rest of Donald’s photographs within the 1900-1950 Gallery then please do get in contact.
